The first LEDE class has graduated, and planning is already under way for the 2011 program.
The program rolled out late last winter with an announcement that News & Interactive was seeking applications for a new type of leadership program - one aimed at developing a group of future newsrooms leaders for GateHouse. The goal is to have a team of candidates to turn to when top newsroom management positions open in the company.
Through the application and interview process, we selected what ultimately turned out to be a class of nine members (see list in related content).
The program launched in April with three days of training at News & Interactive headquarters in Downers Grove, Ill. Through the spring and summer LEDE members participated in webinars, conference calls and a self-directed program to learn about all the operations in their own buildings. Then, each went on a two-day visit to a large paper in the company to see how top GateHouse editors manage operations.
Finally, at the end of last month, the group was back in Downers Grove for three more days of training, featuring sessions on presentation skills, managing up, strategic planning and how to be new in a newsroom. GateHouse president and COO Kirk Davis also spent time with the group talking about the industry and GateHouse plans.
While LEDE 2010 has just wrapped up, we are already beginning to plan for next year. We will make some changes, but what won't change is the need for eager and qualified applicants who want to advance their careers in GateHouse. We will keep you posted at GHNewsroom.com. Look for an announcement and application for the 2011 program here this winter.
