The Perfect Pooches section, now in its fifth year, is one of the most popular special sections in the Bulletin all year. We have found our readers have embraced it as their own. From the first year, when we had 70 entries, we’ve gone to more than 900 entries each of the last two years. Page views have increased in the hundreds of thousands because of people checking out the dogs online. A year ago, went completely electronic for voting for the winning dogs, with about 4,000 e-mails. This year we went to a polling tool for voting, and saw more than 18,000 total votes through several stages of voting.

The concept is simple: Send us a photo of your dog, and let other readers decide if it’s the perfect pooch. We not only have a 16-page special section and the online galleries, we have also incorporated the dogs into our themed pages leading up to the special section. It’s allowed just to not just make this a one-day wonder, but turn it into a February/March Madness type of event.

Because of the consistent success of Perfect Pooches, we are now looking to see if owner of other pets are as enthusiastic. Next up: Fantastic Felines!
