Peoria Journal Star reporter Matt Buedel

Matt Buedel, a reporter with the Journal Star in Peoria, Ill., wrote a over the weekend about how he discovered the body of a missing man with Alzheimer's disease.

"I’m more accustomed to writing about these developments than participating in them," wrote Buedel, "but in this instance I played a small role in providing closure for the family whose strength I had so admired earlier in the week."

Buedel had met with the family last week in their home, and after learning that the man had last been seen near some hills and a creek Buedel was familar with, he set out with a friend to search for the man.

"As a hiker and avid mushroom hunter in the springtime, I know that territory well," wrote Buedel. "I was filling in as an editor on Saturday night when the news of where he was last seen broke in a story by reporter Justin Glawe — and I immediately thought of the steep hillside and wide creek where, 12 hours later, I found John’s body."

We asked John Plevka, managing editor of the Journal Star about the story and Buedel's role.

""It’s a tragic story with a heartbreaking conclusion," said Plevka, "but, I am very proud of Matt’s role in this saga. It’s another example of professional journalists stepping up. Work for these people is more than a 9 to 5 job. It’s absolutely a  way of life."
