Olympic rings
April 25, 2012 12:01 a.m.

AP recently released a style guide for the Olympics, and they followed that up this week with a Twitter chat. AP European Sports Editor @stevewilsonap had these tips from the chat:

- The main new sport in the London Games is women's boxing. Two sports are gone - baseball and softball.

- IOC, short for the International Olympic Committee, is OK on first reference. But use full title in the story.

- The IOC was founded in 1894 in Paris.

- AP uses championship for a single event, like a basketball tournament, plural for multiple events such as track championships.

- It's Horse Guards Parade, no apostrophe.

- London is the first city to host the Summer Olympics for a third time. Previous games were 1908 and 1948.

- Olympic rings have five interlocking rings representing five continents. The colors are blue, yellow, black, green and red.

- The year precedes the host city and Olympics. We're months away from the 2012 Olympics or the 2012 London Games.

- Games are only capitalized when attached to a host city. It's the London Summer Games. The games open on July 27.

- Games are also uppercase when they are part of the Summer Games or the Winter Games.

- Always capitalize Olympics, whether it's a noun or an adjective. America won 10 Olympic gold medals at the Summer Olympics.
