The Merced Sun-Star, a 13,000-circulation newspaper that is second-smallest among McClatchy’s 30 dailies, won a First Amendment award for exposing, through open records requests, racist e-mails sent by a city councilman to friends. Michael Tharp, executive editor, will discuss the Sun-Star’s watchdog examples, including methodology and ripple effects, with plenty of takeaways.

He later worked there as a darkroom boy, sports desk assistant, intern and environmental writer. Throughout his career, he has worked for the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and U.S. News & World Report. He taught journalism for several years at Cal State Fullerton University and has worked at the Merced Sun-Star in California since 2007.
