GateHouse News & Interactive Division leader Brad Dennison told LEDE participants in the fall 2011 session that digital initiatives are front and center for the division this year.

"LIfe was so much simpler 20 years ago," Dennison said. Reporters wrote stories; editors edited them; photographers took photos; and someone put the paper together.

Now, the news industry is looking at mass change. With that change comes challenge and opportunity.

As GateHouse looks at 2012, the company wants to protect print while focusing on digital.

Here are three of the ways Dennison's division fits into the overall picture for the 2012 goals:

1. Project Apple and digital: Dennison reviewed the Inner Circle 2012 emphasis on video, community blogging and social media. He also addressed questions on platform-appropriate publishing, with ultimate goals of distinct content for mobile, websites and print.

2. Mobile: Dennison explained the difference between mobile web (your website configured for a hand-held device) and mobile apps (specific icon on your mobile device). At this time, GateHouse has more of an emphasis on mobile web, which is driving significant traffic.

3. Paid content: GateHouse's use of metering will help position the company for a paid subscription model that includes print, online, mobile and apps. GateHouse is experimenting with different ways to monetize digital content.
