Economists said Monday that our "Great Recession" ended in June 2009.

What does that mean for your readers who've been out of work, who've been foreclosed on, or who otherwise have a different quality of life than they did two or three years ago?

Ideas for taking the temperature of your community on this story:

-- What's next? Sounds like unemployment will still be with us for a while, as will anger and frustration. Talk to counselors for advice on how people can cope, local businesses and temp agencies on when they think they will hire again, and local economy experts on what it will take for growth to start in earnest.

-- Check out your classified listings. Have there been increases over the past few months, over the past year, since June 2009? Or, are things the same as a year ago?

-- What did readers learn from the economic downturn? No doubt more tightened their belt by clipping coupons, doing away with luxuries such as cable or the Internet, maybe even learning to shop at garage sales and flea markets rather than big box stores. Write a story that recaps the lessons learned through your readers' voices.
