ROCKFORD — Mark Baldwin, a suburban Chicago native who’s worked more than 30 years in journalism, took the helm Monday as executive editor of the Rockford Register Star and The Journal-Standard in Freeport.

Baldwin was the editor of The Republic in Columbus, Ind., and also worked for Gannett’s Central Wisconsin Group as executive editor of the Wausau Daily Herald. His career includes working for newspapers in New York, Chicago and Kansas.

Baldwin succeeds Doug Gass, who recently was named manager of content delivery for GateHouse Media Inc.

“I do believe that newspaper journalism is a team sport,” Baldwin said. “I believe strongly in leading by consensus as much as possible. The editor’s job is really to hold the compass for the newsroom.

“You’ve got local editors and online editors who can drive the bus, following the direction the editor holds. But beyond that, it’s important to know we have the right people on the bus following along.”

Josh Trust, publisher for the Register Star and The Journal-Standard, said Baldwin’s experience, passion for the industry and forward-thinking approach to “driving content on digital platforms” set him apart from other candidates for the job.

“Mark is a native of Glenview and has spent a large portion of his career in the Midwest,” said Josh Trust, publisher for the Register Star and The Journal-Standard. “His response to the transformative times our industry is experiencing is refreshing, and his collaborative style will fit in well with our team here in Rockford and Freeport.”

Baldwin, 55, holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from Northwestern University. He and his wife, Sydney, have three daughters: Hannah, Mary and Jane.

“He’s a proven leader, a great manager of people and a nurturer and developer of talent,” said Brad Dennison, GateHouse’s vice president of publishing for the large daily division. “He’s a rare find, and his hiring was a huge win for the Register Star, The Journal-Standard and the communities they serve.”
