Wednesday's Wake Up Call!: Do cell phones hurt your brain?

A new small study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association says cell phone use increases brain cell activity. Phones that are turned off did not cause increased cell activity.

However, it's unknown whether this is bad, and cell phone trade groups say no research has found cell phone radiation to be harmful.

Ways to localize this for your readers:

-- The crux of the JAMA study is to keep your phone away from your brain. List how readers can do that, whether through a headset, a phone's speaker function or texting.

-- Kids may be more at risk because their brains are smaller and still developing. Ask local counselors how parents can deal with a child who wants a cell phone -- health effects may be only one of parents' concerns -- and check your local schools' policies on student phones.

-- Maybe this is all a bunch of hype. Ask readers whether this study will deter them from using their cell phones. If not, what would deter them?
