Logan County native Jean Ann Miller was named managing editor Monday at The Courier in Lincoln, Ill., said Bob Heisse, executive editor of The State Journal-Register.

Both papers are owned by Gatehouse Media, Inc., headquartered in Fairport, N.Y., which publishes 79 dailies and 257 weeklies across the country.

“We’re thriled to have Jean Ann take the reins here,” Heisse said. “She’s a hard worker who cares deeply about her community. Under her guidance the Courier has a bright future."

“GateHouse has a strong foothold in Illinois, and the Courier will feature our statewide and regional reporting as well as strong local coverage."

Richard Johnston, publisher of The Lincoln Courier, agrees.

“I think Jean Ann is the perfect choice to lead the Courier news operation. She knows the community and she has the experience and skills necessary in a fast-paced media environment,” said Johnston, who also is the publisher of The State Journal-Register in Springfield.

Miller, who started working at the paper in March 2010, has reported on various feature stories ranging from The Courier’s Citizen of the Month to coordinating the Saturday Lifestyle section. While at The Courier she earned an honorable mention from the Illinois Press Association for a feature photo she took at the Lincoln YMCA fundraising event. She replaces Nathan Woodside who left the company to pursue other interests.

Miller, 48, originally from Mount Pulaski, has lived in Lincoln for the past 15 years.

Miller is no stranger to writing news. Prior to starting at The Courier, she was communications director at Lincoln College, where she provided news stories and photographs to area media outlets. Her work experience includes selling cable television advertising for MediaOne Advertising and working for WTTE Fox28 in Columbus, Ohio.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, in radio and television and an associate in arts degree from Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, in journalism. She is married to Mike Miller, and they have a 10-year-old daughter.
