Steve McCauley, operations manager for GateHouse Media New England, was so moved by what happened when a tornado tore through Harrisburg, IL that he need to do something to help.
Here's what he did, in his own words:
Shortly after the tornadoes hit in the MidWest, I was browsing on our corporate website and read Mike Reed's memo about the victims of the storm. I was shocked to see that a Gatehouse employee lost 2 family members in that storm. Needless to say, it was a tremendous tragedy, and I wanted to do something, knowing I couldn't help much but some effort might help a little bit. I emailed Mike and asked him if I could run a yard sale at our Marshfield location, where we are storing old furniture from the many office downsizings and closings over the years, and probably would never use the abundance of materials that we had. Mike gave me the thumbs up and thanked me for the thought.
I put an ad in our local (GateHouse) newspapers and we had the sale on March 24th. We raised $2,700 that day. Considering this was a good day, I decided to have another one this Saturday, April 7th. We don't know how much we will raise this time but I am hoping for another $1,000. We did a similar employee sale last year for the victims of the Joplin storm, where some of our employees were directly affected, we raised $1500 at that event.
David Arkin had me reach out to Jim Murphy, (regional publisher) and George Wilson, direct manager of the employee that suffered the losses. They both thanked me."
