A surge in mobile visits helped push GateHouse Media web traffic above 80 million page views for the first time in January 2011.
The 82 million page views were more than 18 percent higher than January 2010. January 2011 topped the previous monthly high of January 2009, when 78.4 million page views were fueled by the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
GateHouse mobile sites racked up 3.5 million mobile views in January, a 76 percent increase over December and continuing a steady increase since the platform was launched in August 2010.
Some more highlights from the January 2011 analytics:
- All 10 of the top GateHouse sites saw year-over-year desktop traffic increases of between 3 percent and 34 percent.
- All 10 of the top mobile sites saw month-over-month increases of between 40 percent and 120 percent.
- The top story of the month - a Kirksville (Mo.) Daily Express story about a lockdown at a WalMart - drew nearly 273,000 page views after being picked up by The Drudge Report.
- Three of the top five stories of the month were photo galleries.
