The Times-Reporter named front page of the day (01/24/12)

The Times-Reporter front page from Tuesday includes a centerpiece story by Jon Baker on the latest from the booming fracking industry that is booming all over Ohio. The story focuses on concerns residents have and how officials are responding.

A submitted photo is used for the dominant image. The two stories are set on top of the photo to help contain the package.

There's nothing wrong with displaying type — or in this case the stories — on top of a photo. The main story is set against a clear-blue sky, keeping the type legible. The second story is kept in a white box because, I'm assuming, the photo was too busy for type to be displayed on top. A good move.

One thing I would have suggested, though, was to give a little more breathing room around the edges of both stories. WIth the photo resting next to the rail, the type seems awful tight on the left side. The extra space to the right of the tower amplifies that tightness.

Otherwise, a really nice page.
