Observer-Dispatch named from page of the month (April 2011)

Selecting the top front page for April was a tough decision. So many good fronts by so many papers. What stood out on this cover was the planning and organization of its flood package from April 29. Look more closely at that front page and you can see this was a page that didn't come together on deadline.

Kris Worrell, the new editor at the O-D, sent along the inside pages for the flood coverage, as well as some insight into this report.

"We began coverage of the flooding about 5 a.m., bringing in extra reporters, photographers and editors early. We started thinking about how the front page would look almost immediately, grouping the pieces of information together as the reporting unfolded. "We were looking for the focus right from the beginning," said Ron Johns, Managing Editor. "It also kept down on the chaos since there was so much to cover."

"The red overline above the masthead was originally designed to grab readers' attention to the flooding package. However, we had breaking news on a high profile shooting case come in about 5:30 p.m., so we adjusted the design again.

"This was a wonderful example of what we aim to do everyday: the entire newsroom worked together to provide up-to-the-minute information online and broad storytelling in print."

Great job by Kris and her staff!
