The Repository front page design has been on fire lately (May 11, May 9, May 3). Equally hot is today's front page centerpiece story on local Census data that shows the median age of Stark County has risen by almost three years since 2000.
Makes you want to say, "Hmmm," right? Me too.
Those numbers are included right here at the top of the package, clearly defined by the box type next to the big numbers.
The tab chart at the bottom of the package offers more details behind those big numbers up top. Speaking of big numbers, love the additional stats next to the story, offering readers more context.
What I'm not wild about in the centerpiece: The colors.
The red 41.1 at top shows in increase over the gray-ish 38.2. Yet below, the same red color is used for a downward-point arrow to show a decrease. It's better to be consistent with the message even when that message is offered visually.
Also, if you include the black type, there are five different colors in use in the centerpiece — black, red, gray (yes, it's different than black), green and the reddish tan. Much like fonts, too many colors can be a distraction.
One last thing about the centerpiece worth mentioning: No photos. With interesting local information played in a big way such as this, I don't miss it.
Nice job juggling a great deal of info!
