The Hillsdaile Daily News front gets page-of-the-day honors today for showing something that may surprise you, as it did me.
The centerpiece package is about the birth of baby boy to a local couple. Born on Valentine's Day, little Karter was born with a birth mark with an unlikely shape in an unlikely place. Do you see it?
Here's a closer look:
Yep, that's a nearly perfect heart-shaped birth mark smack dab in the middle of Karter's forehead.
After seeing the photo, at first I thought, "Hmm. Some doctor or nurse drew a pink heart on the baby's head for Valentine's Day."
If this ran without a photo, it likely wouldn't have had this large an impact. Stories about things you want reader to see scream for a photo. So glad this ran to show readers just how amazing that birthmark really is.
The headline is fine and appropriate for the story, but made me think this an ordinary story about a Valentine's Day baby.
In other words, the headline didn't give away the surprise until reading the story. Written and photographed by Nicole Dominique, I couldn't fine the story on Hillsdale's site, so the link above it her story that appeared on the site belonging to sister paper the Sturgis Journal, who also ran the story as its centerpiece. (Scroll down to see that front.)
Elsewere, in the left rail, everything seems to be in place, except for the Only in Print and Only Online logos. The images used here were shrunk to fit the in the space. That particular style logo is intended to be used as a carousel item on your newspapers's website to push readers from online to print. Using the larger logo with the bold arrow could be confusing to readers because the arrow can inadvertantly point to an adjacent headline or story instead of the content below.
Read this for more info on the proper way to use the logo. Also at that link is a video that shows correct and incorrect uses for the logo.
Over in the right rail is a nice "people speak" column where folks on the street were asked "What recent happening in the news has left you wanting to know more?"
There responses, in order from the top:
1. What happened to Whitney Houston
2. What happened to Whitney Houston
3. Economy — housing, gas prices and jobs
4. Obama compromise on contraception
5. Good news, not bad
You just never know what people want to read unless you ask.
Nice page.
