| Give us a short history of your newspaper: |
The Daily Messenger is almost as old as the nation itself, having been founded in 1796 as the Ontario Gazette (the premiere issue, Nov. 24, 1796, included President Washington's farewell address). It has published continually. The weekly Post papers go back generations in their various Monroe County communities. The offices in Canandaigua were renovated and expanded in 1999 to resemble (from the outside) the Canandaigua Beer brewery that operated on the site in the 19th century.
|
| Tell us something unique about your community: |
It is home to the Treaty of Canandaigua, between Grand Council of the Six Nations and President George Washington Nov. 11, 1794. The treaty was established to promote peace and friendship between the United States of America and the Six Nations, and affirmed Haudenosaunee land rights in NY.

| Do you have any quirky or fun newsroom traditions? Any mascots? What's your newsroom snack of choice? |
We have holiday feast days, which involve everyone bringing a dish to pass to celebrate Thanksgiving and the new year. Colleagues travel from department to department to share a fun, pot-luck meal and good tidings.
|
| What has your newsroom accomplished in the past year that you are most proud of? What was your biggest story of the year? |
Our daily won the Associated Press Newspaper of Distinction award for the second straight year and our publications were recognized in the GateHouse Inner Circle.
|
| What new initiatives does your newspaper have planned this year? (Is there a new feature, special section or big story you want to tackle?) |
We are excited about the possibilities associated with the mobile app. We are reorganizing our breaking news team -- as well as our UGC group for print and web -- so we can be competitive in our market.
|
| How about anything else you’d like to share? |
We have an incredibly dedicated staff that remains committed to quality journalism and understands the demands and rewards of new media. We're well-positioned to grow and thrive in the digital age.
