The newspapers in southern Illinois dedicated their monthly Healthy Living tab to Salute to Nurses content written locally and by GateHouse Media News & Interactive Division.

GateHouse Media-owned newspapers in southern Illinois took a different path in disseminating News & Interactive Division’s Salute to Nurses content in honor of National Nurses Week.

Along with syndicated content, the local newspapers wrote stories and published the articles in its monthly Healthy Living tab, which was 62 pages in May.

The tab is inserted into all of the southern Illinois properties, including the Daily Republican in Marion, Du Quoin Evening Call, Harrisburg Daily Register, Benton Evening News and the Daily American in West Frankfort.

The centerpiece package for the tab focused on the local winner of the Salute to Nurses online contest and the other 17 nominees, including short bios and headshots.

“Her office staff considered it a great honor at the time of the presentation,” regional editor Terry Geese said of Julie Adkins, a nurse practitioner in West Frankfort who was selected as the area’s favorite nurse. “She is well-known and respected here and has been a leader and advocate of the nurse practitioner field in southern Illinois.

“She's more like an old family doc as she even makes house calls.”
