Associate Publisher and Editor Lisa Strattan has been appointed publisher of GateHouse Media New England’s SouthCoast-based operations, including The Herald News in Fall River and the Taunton Daily Gazette, as well as overseeing GateHouse’s ethnic weekly publication, O Jornal. The appointment becomes effective Monday.

“Lisa is a creative and innovative leader with a proven track record of success,” said Sean Burke, president and group publisher of GateHouse Media New England. “She brings a passion and commitment to everything that she does, which will serve her well in her new role, and our company well as she assists our senior management team in setting our course for success.”

Strattan has been editor-in-chief of The Herald News since 2003 and the Taunton Daily Gazette since February 2010.  More recently, she was named associate publisher and editor-in-chief of the group in May 2012.  Strattan has an extensive background and deep community ties. She joined The Herald News in 1991 as editorial page editor and later succeeded to managing editor.  Prior to joining The Herald News, Strattan held editorial positions at several newspapers, including publications in Colorado Springs, Colo.; Hollywood and Sarasota, Fla.; and Iowa City, Iowa.

“I am honored to be taking on this role in such an exciting and challenging time for our company and our industry,” Strattan said. “I’m grateful to Sean Burke not only for his mentorship, but for the solid foundation he’s left for us to build upon. These newspapers and websites and the communities they serve are so important to me. I take their stewardship as a profound responsibility and privilege.”

Throughout her career, Strattan has won many journalism awards, and during her tenure as editor, the newsrooms she led were awarded dozens of regional journalism honors. She is vice chairwoman of the Center for Marketing Research Advisory Board at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and she serves on the board of directors of Bridgewater Credit Union. She sits on the board of Leadership SouthCoast and chaired its marketing committee, and is also a member of the SouthCoast Alliance. She was a SMILES mentor for four years and served on the executive committee of the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts, chairing its marketing committee.

Strattan and her husband, Jim, live in New Bedford and have six grown children and four grandchildren between them.
