As park districts spring to life with warmer weather, opening community pools and ramping up summer recreation programs, now might be the best time to approach your local district about starting a blog.

WHAT THEY DID: The Hannibal (MO) Courier-Post got the assistant supervisor in charge of marketing and event planning for the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department to blog. It’s a mix of event announcements and coverage.

It’s a good outlet for a department that might otherwise be pounding local reporters with press releases – and provides a place for residents to find out about new programs and park district news.

THE TAKEAWAY: If you’re getting rapid-fire releases from your park district as the weather heats up, approach the PR director about doing a blog. They’ll get an established platform to reach residents, and you’ll get an extra blogger.

Here’s two non-GateHouse park district blogs to use as examples:

Naperville

Urbana
