Americans saw their income fall less than 1 percent last year and senior citizens saw a somewhat significant increase in their income.

A USA Today report
this week notes that the median household income has dropped 0.7 percent in the last year, while those households with folks 65 and older, saw a nearly 6 percent increase in income. The story attributes the small drop in median income to stimulus programs, while the bump in income for seniors comes from Social Security provided by the federal government through stimulus programs.

This is a good story to do some localization on:

• As state and Senate candidates debate new taxes and funds to boost the economy, concerns over how stimulus funds were used, offers some backdrop for what's currently being considered. What do your local lawmakers have to say about stimulus funds and without them, what might these figures look like?

• There are many more people who are living in poverty this year, compared to last year, a nearly 4 million person increase. What does local unemployment look like today, compared to a year ago? Do local stats match what's going on nationally?
