The Rockford Desgn House produced the first two GateHouse papers Monday night at the centralized facility in northern Illinois. Not only that, pages for the Rockford Register Star and the Freeport Journal-Standard closed early.

"We closed Freeport 20 minutes early and Rockford 10 minutes early. Yes!" said Jennie Broecker, the director of the Rockford Design House.

Here's a closer look at front pages for Freeport and Rockford, as well as the sports fronts for each.

Here's Rockford's Local front:

Broecker credited the  effort by the staff for the first-night success.

"Very proud of the Rockford Design House team tonight (good leadership by (common content News Editor) Adam (McHugh) and (nightside Manager) Matt (Torman), good coaching by (copy editor/page designer) Matt Williams and (Team Leader) Jen Driscoll, and quick pickup by the handful of new employees who never touched Saxo until today."

Here are some photos taken Monday in Rockford:

Meanwhile, in Framingham, the first several members of the Design House staff began their day Monday reading copy while awaiting the arrival of pages from the ad layout system. Once in hand, designers got to work on pages for a number of editions, preparing for the first press deadline that hits at 7:15 Eastern tonight.

After the first six papers are put to bed tonight, initial work will begin on the 11 publications that deadline Wednesday. The deadlines are staggered throughout the day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The early morning deadline necessitates the need to get as much done tonight as possible before crunch time in the morning.

By the end of this week, some 21 weekly editions will publish, said Conor Plunkett, Design House Director for Framingham.

Designers in any one of the 11 new cubicles are working amid construction noise and dust the permeates the air. Only about 50 percent of construction work is complete. When done, about 80 designers will work in Framingham. About 60 will work in Rockford.

Here are some photos taken Monday and Tuesday in Framingham:

When complete, the Framingham Design House will employ about 80 designers. The office is only 50 percent complete, meaning the designers are working on one side of room while carpenters and painters are working on the other side of the room.
