When the president comes to town for a visit, as he did here in Galesburg, Ill., rally the staff for big-time coverage. That's what the editors at The Register-Mail did yesterday for today's fantastic front.
Yes, the president spoke from behind podium at one point during this unannounced stop (see secondary photo). But he also stopped to shake hands with members of the high school volley ball team.
Can you say "photo opp?"
That great shot across six columns is by staffer Ken Exum. A fine photo selection.
And that headline is a hoot, referencing the president's sleek RV in which he travelled across the midwest. Four three-deck subheads give readers a lot information, which is especially nice since the main photo pushes everything below the fold.
On a typical day, the newspaper is a temporary fixture on kitchen tables, discarded into a recylcling bin at day's end.
This paper is understandably different. Sure, many will likely be thrown out. But for many people, perhaps those young ladies smiling on the front page, this paper, this front page, will be carefully preserved in scrapbooks as the day the president came to town.
Regardless of your political affiliatin, this is a big deal.
Really nice work by the entire staff at The Register-Mail.
