The Herald News front page today features a centerpiece story by Grant Welker on a local company that erected a 415-foot wind turbine to power its building.
The package uses a giant vertical shot of a turbine as a backdrop for the story, headline and mugs. The photo on the front page is uncredited and is without a caption. The story online, however, does include the name of staff photographer Dave Souza and this cutline:
Lightolier's new wind turbine, located at the Fall River Industrial Park, should start spinning for good this spring.
Including a credit and caption is important, of course, especially for a photo this large and when the story is about a specific thing. Absent the cutline, readers will be left to assume if the photo is file or of the actually subject of the story.
A faded edge was added to the photo to perhaps keep the text of the story legible — a good move. Talking heads were inserted in the negative space between the turbine blades. With the description off the big ceremony announcing the turbine in the second graph, a photo of the event would have been nice to see on the cover as a secondary photo. Here's the second graph from Welker's story:
The ceremony took place in a corner of the massive warehouse. It was a highly orchestrated affair, with tables of food and drinks for employees, music, and a camera crew filming the speakers, with the footage displayed on two massive screens behind the stage. Officials called the turbine a symbol of both the company’s commitment to the environment and to the city.
The description of the scene warrants a photo, do you think?
Elsewhere, the results of Florida's GOP primary are neatly presented as vote-total percentages beneath the mugs of each candidate.
