In this installment of Inside Design, we'll take a look at a project by the Hannibal Courier-Post and a couple sports pages by the Rockford Register Star.

Down in Hannibal, Mo., the city last week celebrated the 100th anniversary of the death of Samuel Clemens, also known as Mark Twain. The Courier-Post pulled all the stops, producing a commemorative special section. Clemens, by the way, once employed by The Courier-Post as a printer's devil — an apprentice in the composing room that set pages.

Mary Lou Montgomery, editor of The Courier-Post, shares some thoughts about the section and the days that led up to it:

"Our town is built upon the river bluffs and valleys made famous by Samuel Clemens. This year has been dubbed "The Year of Mark Twain," recognizing the 100th anniversary of his death, and the 175th anniversary of his birth. To generate interest among our readers, we conducted a sponsored countdown on page one, consisting of reader-submitted photos of family snapshots at Twain landmarks. The countdown culminated with a commemorative edition of April 21, coinciding with a time capsule ceremony. Our newspaper of the day, and this special edition, were key elements in the capsule, to be re-opened in 50 years. This countdown and special edition are yet one more way we are involving readers in their newspaper."

The section includes numerous stories on local events, reprints of historical columns from gone-by eras, even a reprint of the April 22, 1910, edition of the Courier-Post that trumpeted Twain's passing can be found inside the special edition.

Several of the pages are seen at left.

Great job, Mary Lou and crew!

Now let's turn our attention to the Rockford Register Star. The sports department decided to fill some space with a fantastic package on the NFL draft. Here's what Adeam McHugh, delivery desk editor, had to say about how the two open, facing pages came together.

"These page were kind of a last-minute thing. On Friday morning, we found out we had a lot of space for Sunday's edition, so sports edtior Randy Ruef and myself talked about expanding what we already were going to do with the draft, which probably would take up one page. Since Bradford and Suh are expected to grab the 1 and 2 spots in the first round on Thursday, I figured I would use them as a starting point. AP also did a mock draft, which worked well as a lengthy breakout at the top and bottom of page, while the offensive player capsules could go on the Bradford side and the defensive capsules on the Suh side."

These pages were last-minute? Wow, talk about pressure! These pages are fantastic! An open page was devoted to both offensive and defensive players. The dominant photos on each page were cutouts of top picks, along with information on each. The Associated Press' mock draft content, along with images of the helmets, lined the top and bottom edges of each page. Outstanding, Adam!
