The Holland Sentinel named front page of the day (06/17/11)

It's not often you see a map as a dominant image. But at The Holland Sentinel, that was the right call to make with a story about the fifth season of the year — road construction season.

Instead of writing a long narrative that describes the location of each project slated to start soon. The the map and the site descriptions below allow readers to see at an instant what is happening when and where, and how it may affect them. The size of the map is needed here to get in the No. 3 item over there in Park Township to the west.

The descrptions below are informative and add a tremendous amount of context. Adding that many numbers to the story would have made the story clunky.

My only beef with the maps is the clutter — too many streets make for a busy map. Keep it simple.

Still a fine, fine page.
