The Patriot Ledger has won seven national journalism awards from Suburban Newspapers of America, including first place prizes for best editorial writing and best coverage of local business and economic news.
Reporter Jennifer Mann was the second-place winner of the organization’s Journalist of the Year award. The award recognizes journalists whose work advances public understanding of life within the community. Mann also won a third-place award for best continuing coverage for a series of stories about local charities’ compliance with state law.
The Patriot Ledger competed against daily newspapers with circulations of more than 25,000 daily copies.
Editorial page editor John Murphy won first place for best editorial writing for opinion pieces that focused on the state’s failings in the prosecution and monitoring of sex offenders who target children and on how a Weymouth board’s secretive hiring process trampled on residents’ rights.
The contest’s first place award for business and economic reporting went to reporters Jack Encarnacao and Allison Manning for a three-part series that investigated reasons behind delays in the development of the closed air base in South Weymouth. (Scroll down for page example.)
Editorial cartoonist Joseph Mahoney, who signs his work O’Mahoney, won third place for his cartoon commentary on a decision by St. Paul’s school in Hingham to withdraw acceptance of the child of a lesbian couple.
The Ledger won third place for best front page designs by graphic artist Bob Monahan and copydesk chief Jen Wagner.
Monahan also won third place for best graphic art.
