First Mother's Day
Leah Nichols didn’t think she would be celebrating her first Mother’s Day this year because her daughter, Payge, wasn’t due until early June. Payge was delivered by an emergency cesarean section three weeks ago, seven weeks prematurely.

From Lynne Sherwin, features editor, Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal:

Our most popular write-in ever was when we asked for "momisms." We got more than 200 responses, and this was in 2001 before a lot of people had e-mail. Some fun ones:

  • Belly buttons are for putting salt in when you eat celery in bed.
  • I never dust under the bed, because God said man came from dust and I wanted to see who would show up.
  • Don't park the billy goat in front of the car unless you know how to drive a stick shift.
  • You want them (husbands) handsome, but not too handsome. If they're too handsome, then they're usually in love with themselves. You want to find a man who's just handsome enough so you don't have homely children.
  • My mom always told me if I am going to be a bum, be a bum out of town.
  • Don't sit on cold concrete or porch steps or you'll get diarrhea.

MORE FOR MOM:

  • In the wake of the Hilary Rosen/Ann Romney/moms don’t work brouhaha, Mother’s Day is a perfect time to ask moms and non-moms about their job/work/calling, etc. Create a timeline of a few moms’ and non-moms’ days, ask local women’s health experts about reproductive aging, ask local mental health counselors how childlessness and motherhood can affect, negatively or positively, women’s psyches.
  • Profile women who’ve struggled to become moms, and provide advice for local women seeking in vitro, adoption or other avenues to motherhood.
  • A week or so in advance of Mother’s Day, create a Mom-ese-to-English translation for gift giving. For example, Mom says, “I don’t need a gift – all I want for Mother’s Day is to see you.” Translation, “But flowers are also nice.”
  • What do moms think of Mother’s Day? Do they take advantage of everyone willing to pamper them? Is it too much fuss? Shouldn’t every day be Mother’s Day?!
  • Everyone will be hitting the brunch spots on Mother’s Day. Where can readers take mom to eat that won’t require a two-hour wait? Name some out-of-the-way, though yummy, places to dine.
