Tanning bed troubles
Chanel Berardi, 18, tanning Monday at Riviera Salon and Spa at 2133 Court Street in Pekin, says she has been a regular tanner since she was 15. “It makes me feel better when I’m darker,” Berardi said. She added, “You don’t have to worry about makeup if you have a base tan.”

From USA Today: "White women, ages 18 to 21, have the highest rate of indoor tanning with 32% saying they did indoor tanning at least once in the past 12 months. That group reports an average of 28 times they did indoor tanning in the same period. And 30% of women ages 22-25 say they used indoor tanning devices."

The CDC released a report this week, in the wake of the controversy over a New Jersey mother who allegedly took her 5-year-old daughter into a tanning salon with her, that shows one-third of young, white women use tanning beds.

To localize:

- Talk to physicians - are their young adult, female patients tanning? Do doctors warn their patients of the hazards of tanning beds?

- Talk to tanning salons - what kind of clientele  do they have - are there a preponderance of younger women?

- Ask fans and followers on Facebook and Twitter - do they tan? Why?
