There's something about a front page with breaking news spread across six columns that makes people take notice. The Observer-Dispatch front I'm certain got noticed today.
Editors rightfully decided to go with more of a second-day headline, since this story broke yesterday morning. People all over town likely already knew about the story yesterday, but this is the first chance the O-D had at reporting it in print.
The big photo over six columns by staffer Nicole Cvetnic doesn't have a whole lot of action, but how often do you see that many officials discussing an incidient? Not very, making the photo worthy of the size. Secondary photo shows the scene of the homicide.
The story at left feels a little weak without a headline over it. See how it differs in impact with the story at right?
The secondary headlines at top get a little more oomph with the red bullets.
The entire package gets a littlemore space with the reduction in the number of skybox items. Usually there are at least four items up there, two or three with art. Good call.
Nice page.
