It's almost Halloween, and GateHouse News Service has a callout ready-made for you to use in print and online to ask readers for photos of their holiday costumes, parties and other events.
Here are some ways to maximize this callout's potential, aside from other good ideas you'll find in the links at right:
-- Facebook costume photo contest: Gain FB fans and great art for your paper and website by asking readers to share costume photos through the social network. Be sure to specify that you want family-friendly photos, however! Winners can be determined by staff, the community or both -- or better yet, invite all of your costumed fans to the newspaper the Friday before Halloween and hold the judging in person.
-- Lead by example: Kick off this callout by running photos of staffers and/or their kids and pets in costume with it. You can provide the names of the masked journalists, or have readers guess.
