The town of Massillon, perhaps best known for football tradition, has produced eight Major Leaguer's. Not bad for a town of roughly 32,000.
The front page of The Independent does a nice job highlighting the career span of each of these players with their centerpiece item on the Massillon Museum's Brown Bag Lunch event, illuminating the towns baseball history. The story was written by Doug Staley and can be read here.
Though the package stands out with it's five column display, some creative attention might have been paid to the well-written headline to really make this piece pop: simply using a bolder font would have been a start.
Very nice usage of the player photos, cut out and playing nicely with the type. The piece's timeline is informative and is overall a good, simple read. ("Cy", "Tug", "Fritz", "Fats", "Old Reliable"... yes, Massillon may be known for it's football and baseball heritage but classic nicknames can't be far behind.)
This centerpiece does not compete with other page elements and is clearly the attention getter. Nice job!
