The Enterprise named front page of the day (01/20/12)

The Enterprise followed up yesterday's centerpiece with another fine front again devoted to all-things Patriots.

Today's package also is an alternative story format. This one uses a neatly designed grid of nine images followed by "7 ways to get into the Patriot-ic spirit" written by staffer Daniel McCready.

The photo grid is filled with images of team memorabilia, party decorations wth team logos, etc.

While the photos are neatly organized, the type below is a bit off. Few things to note:

• The wider text box for numbes 1, 2 and 3. — Always try to keep legs of type uniform within a package.

• The headlines are inconsistent. — Some are one deck, others are two. Some fill the lines nicely, others do not. Keep 'em consistent.

• Alignment is off. — It's good to use the "extra in your Enterprise" logo, especially when it's a print-only story, but look for ways to keep the headlines aligned horizontally as well.

About the photos, there are nine. It's a graphically nice number of elements because they can be presented in a 3-by-3 grid. But they don't match the "7 ways to get into the Patriot-ic spirit". Also, some images aren't mentioned in the seven items, such as the photo of the chicken wings. Items 4 and 6 are about snacks and mention chips and popcorn respectively.

Granted, it's supposed to be a fun feature package on the home team, so there's some flexibility. Always let the content drive the design.

Asking readers if they're going to the game is nice. It gives reporters instant contacts for more local angles.

Nice page.
