The Daily Republican in Marion, Ill., has launched a unique news project that takes a look at workers in their community over a 24-hour period.

The series "24 in 24," examines the life of workers in Williamson County through the eyes of 24 residents at work each hour of the day.

Here's one of the stories in the series, a profile on an emergency room worker.

Matt Hawkins, a reporter at The Daily Republican explained how the project came together:

The "24 in 24" series is something I spun off a "Day in the Life" photo feature I tried a couple years ago.  "Day in the Life" was a 24-hour photo blitz of life around Williamson County on one summer day.  That turned into a tab.  I'd seen that concept done well in early 2007 when I worked at the Mt. Vernon Register-News.  Being a 24-hour blitz, it was taxing on our small staff to have a few photos each hour, even with a bunch of them prearranged.

I wanted to come up with something else to highlight everyday life around the county.  The photo blitz was fun, but it didn't offer any real insight into the people.  I also tried a "Behind the Scenes" feature series earlier this year that died when I ran out of ideas.  That was a series of personality profiles with residents who had interesting jobs, yet weren't in the public spotlight. "24 in 24" merged the "Day in the Life" and "Behind the Scenes" concepts.

A few stories on my list include a florist (conveniently for Valentine's Day week), overnight staff at a local nursing home, a teacher, a pastor, a farmer, a bartender and an airport security guard.
