It all began about two months before the contest, when the Daily Messenger contacted the organizers about profiling the contestants and showing "American Idol" like video clips of their acts. The organizers, Canandaigua Academy Softball Boosters, loved the idea and agreed to help us with the project.
The planning helped make the print and online production go smoothly. We were able to get the questions for our ASF to the organizers ahead of time, so the students would be ready to hand them in on the day we met. The ASF included
favorite band, last concert you went to, what's on your iPod and what their performance will be.
We received permission to do the production at the middle school, making it convenient for the students to participate. Reporter Kevin Fuller shot video of the contestants talking about their inspiration for performing and giving a short musical performance.
In the week leading up to the competition, CA Idol took center stage in the Daily Messenger's Your Life features cover and on our Web site, MPNnow.com. The week-long print and online series included the thumbnail profiles, photos and video clips of the young performers.
The project was successful in building anticipation for the event and attracting people to our Web site to watch the videos. "CA Idol" drew about 4,800 unique page views to MPNnow.com.
It was a fine performance that received much applause in the community.
