Beware college students: That laptop Mom and Dad got you as you walked out the door and into the next chapter of your life, may be dangerous.

According to this USA Today story over the weekend, a University of North Carolina study finds a few serious concerns when it come to laptop usage:

• Based on the position of someone's fingers and body, severe nerve injury to wrists and possible carpal tunnel syndrome can occur.

• Poor neck position and shoulder posture can create muscle strain and soreness.

• Normally headaches, wrist and shoulder pain and tingling in the fingers can occur.

The story offers a variety of tips to avoid the trouble, mostly having to do with posture and sitting position.

While this story impacts more than just college students, it's timely because many parents outfit their kids with laptops before going to college or let their teen take a family laptop to college.

Here are a few ideas:

• Get in touch with a doctor to see if they have treated folks for any of the above issues due to posture. Find out if students can obtain the issues in college or are more likely to have the problems later in life even if they start the bad practices in college.

• Talk to a local computer store for a general trend story on laptop sales. What has the economy done to sales? Are parents buying cheaper options? Are store owners concerned with this story? Do they have tips to offer?
