"Here's a reader call-out that could lead to some local news tips on this big story. We have some strong local leads already in communities like Randolph with a large Haitian population, but hopefully this will lead to others."

Reader callout helps newsroom find baby New Year
Robert McCune, editor of The Independent in Massillon, Ohio, launched a successful reader callout last week. Here, Robert shares how The Independent found their New Year's Baby:

Facebook pages fill up with Christmas photos, so ask readers to send them to you
Did your Facebook page — thanks to your "friends" — turn into a Christmas holiday photo album?
I know mine did. And I know I was a contributor as well.
Friends and family posted photo after photo of their cute kids dressed up for the holiday, opening presents and of family members at holiday dinners and parties.
What does this tell us newspaper people? That readers have content they want to share. So ask them.
Reader callout: Ask readers to send in photos of New Years fun
Millions will party on Thursday night, into Friday morning, as the ball falls and a new year — and decade — begins.
Make sure you ask readers to submit photos of how they brought in the New Year.
The GateHouse News & Interactive Division has a callout prepared you can use to generate interest.
Reader callout: Ask kids to send their letters to Santa
Remember when you were a kid and the excitement you felt when you wrote that first or second letter to Santa? Remember how you couldn't wait to put it in the mailbox and get it to the North Pole?
While writing letters is a thing of the past for many, kids and Santa letters still play a big part in the lives of your readers.
That's why it's a great idea to ask readers to send their kids' Santa letters to your newspaper, with a promise of printing those letters before Christmas.
Reader involvement: Seek the best Christmas decorations in your community
Only 20-some days to Christmas, which means your niehghors are likely starting to deck out their houses for the holiday.
The GateHouse News Service has designed a house ad you can use to ask readers to send in photos of their houses decorated for the holiday.
Download it here.
Reader callouts: 'Repetition seems to be the most important factor'
Alice Coyle, managing editor of the Raynham unit in Massachusetts, shares this strategy for a holiday-themed reader callout:
"Here's an example of a "call out" we started Friday in anticipation of the coming holiday season.
Reader callout: Ask readers to share thoughts on what they're thankful for
Families everywhere will reveal to each other next week what they're thankful for.
It's a long-standing tradition of Thanksgiving and a terrific opportunity to get readers involved with their hometown newspaper.
Asking readers what they are thankful for, is one of a handful of recommened reader callout promotions as part of Web Cube.
Use submitted photos to create more reader interest with callouts
Looking for a way to create more interest with a recent reader callout? Take one of the photos you have received and take The Repository's model and make it your own.
The Repository grabbed a submitted reader photo of fall foliage and encouraged more similar submissions. Here's what the Repository had to say:
