Lots of GateHouse Media newspapers asked readers to submit photos for the Fourth of July. The results have been outstanding.
Here are examples from three different newspapers: The Kirksville Daily Express, the Rockford Registser Star and the State Journal Register.
The GateHouse Media online handbook addresses the importance of photo galleries and encourages newspapers to run callouts for photos and stories from readers throughout the year.
The photos in the galleries above capture a variety of local moments that likely would never make it into the pages of our paper or our web sites without aggressive reader callouts.
The Dover Post has done a nice job, not just asking readers to submit photos of their moments of life from holiday events, but also specific local events. This year marks the 90th anniverary of the Delawre State Fair and the newspaper is asking readers to submit photos of past fairs. Click here to read the callout. This is a great example of how to offer callouts for content of locally-relevant moments.
