Reader submitted content seems to be more important and crucial than ever for lots of reasons:

• Our newspapers are trying to be more local than ever before and reader submitted content and news helps drive that goals.

• When readers submit content they feel more a part of your paper.

• That kind of content creates a very community oriented feel in your paper. It basically opens your door to the community.

That's why it's so good to see lots of newsrooms finding new ways of packaging that kind of news and encouraging submissions.

The Shawnee News Star, a GateHouse newspaper in Oklahoma, has decided that reader submitted content is so important to them that they are going to put a panel of reader photos on the bottom of their front page every day. It's a really strong message to send to a reader: Your news is so important to us that it's going to go on A1 every day.

What works about this feature is that the photos are all the same size, the feature is in the same spot every day and there is a tagline asking readers to submit their photos to be featured in that area.
