Through a variety of onsite training programs and webinars, newsrooms will receive training on topics that range from ethics to alternative story formats.

For newsrooms that are not yet executing all areas of the News & Interactive Division’s News Cube and Web Cube strategies, intensive, hands-on training will focus on online and print basics.

REQUIRED TRAINING

Web Cube

  • Constant online updates
  • Multimedia: photo galleries and/or video
  • First in Print
  • Online reader callouts


News Cube

  • Community partner journalism: profiles and event formats
  • Public service journalism: alternative story format community watchdog features
  • First in Print
  • Print reader callouts


Training also will be provided in new required areas:

  • Search engine optimization: Directing readers to your website using specific techniques
  • Ethics: Addressing issues through practical exercises that pose ethical questions, referencing the ethics handbook
  • Mobile: Addressing how to produce content and develop workflow to engage this audience


ADDITIONAL TRAINING

In addition to the mandatory training, newsrooms that are consistently executing News Cube and Web Cube will have a choice of two of these training decks:

  • Time management: Techniques and analysis of your processes and production
  • Make your copy sparkle: Down and dirty review of grammar and mnemonic devices
  • Make your headlines pop: Techniques for drawing readers into a story
  • Updates: Getting beyond posting the latest press release or obit
  • Social media: How to use Facebook and Twitter effectively
  • Blogging: Tips for beginners and those who need to update more consistently
  • Photography: From toning to content, how to make the most of your art
  • Design: Five basic design rules and how they apply to your paper
  • Online storytelling: Layering content on your website


Webinars

We’ll continue to offer monthly webinars on a variety of topics from our training staff and a variety of guest trainers on topics such as computer-assisted reporting, FOIA and how to make it work for you, and leadership sessions on offering effective feedback and having difficult discussions.
