Please review annually the newsroom’s Ethics Handbook, which defines our core values and our commitment to our communities.

We are committed to:

Reporting accurately – in fact and in context
We believe our role in our community is to tell the truth — to tell accurately, clearly, fairly and in context what is going on so that readers know and can act upon matters that affect their lives. We are dedicated to the truthful, accurate and thorough reporting of news and information in all presentations of our material in news stories, opinion columns, editorials and visual elements across multiple platforms. We do not plagiarize or misstate our identities.

Serving the public interest, while upholding the First Amendment
We believe in journalism and its power to provide community and editorial leadership, which includes, but is not limited to, the power to: (a) right wrongs; (b) explain problems; (c) explore possible solutions; (d) shine the light and give a voice; and (e) hold government and public and private institutions accountable.

Acting with integrity
We are dedicated to obeying the law of the land and to acting honorably and ethically when dealing with sources, the public and each other. We will not break the law.  We will observe common standards of decency. We will treat each other with respect. We will take responsibility for our decisions and our actions. We believe that a profession that subjects people and institutions to intense scrutiny must maintain the highest of principles and must avoid conflicts of interest. We are dedicated to maintaining independence and remaining free of outside interests, influences, investments or business relationships that may compromise our credibility. We will not run for political office or campaign.

Serving our community
We are committed to reflecting and serving our local communities. We have no greater responsibility than understanding and reporting on the people who live in our communities and on their values and critical issues. We will connect with them and ensure their voices help shape our content. We believe in journalism that puts the reader first, that seeks to know what is on readers’ minds, and delivers news and information in the many ways readers want to get it. We believe in journalism that treats readers with respect. We understand there are differences between those who deal with us regularly and those who do not. We are committed to diversity, both in our coverage and in our staffing.

Ensuring transparency
What we do and the decisions we make are often mysteries to those outside the newsroom. We understand that in upholding our principles, we can do great good and great harm. There will be times when our principles will collide and will create ethical dilemmas that must be resolved, sometimes at the expense of another principle. We believe that openness and transparency among ourselves, our co-workers and with our readers, improves understanding and enhances our credibility. Transparency ensures that even when principles conflict, our readers understand what we do.
