Tuesday's Wake Up Call! Do products to help smokers quit work?

Trying to quit smoking? Some products aimed at helping might not work.

For smokers who want to make the leap to quit, are nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) the way to go? A new study suggests therapies like the nicotine patch and gum may not be as effective as some smokers trying to quit might hope.

Almost one third of quitters in the survey relapsed. And the relapse rate was the same for those who used nicotine therapies for more than six weeks and those who didn't - with or without professional counseling. Whether the participants were heavy or light smokers made no difference either on the therapies' effectiveness.

  • Talk to local smokers who are trying to quit. If they are using patches or gum, talk about their success rate as opposed to quitting cold turkey.
  • Local doctors can weigh in on the issue, and give some tips on the best practices they have seen. They can also list all of the options available to people who are trying to quit.
  • Update people on local smoking laws, and look at how they have changed over the years.
  • Local cancer groups can give readers a reality check on the dangers of smoking.
