VIDEO: HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASON PREVIEW SECTION

You shoud try it: If you're in a market with more than one high school football team — or one with a truly fanatic fan base — a preview section could make sense. This kind of section could be a mix of preview feature stories and team pages, with lots of quick entry points on that team.

The tempaltes you'll get: A cover and inside team page.

The technical piece:
The section cover includes a large football image that's included in this package. The cmyk image is color color corrected and ready to use. You'll need to relink the cover image with the image file. A text box is in place at the top of the page to hold your newspaper name. Four teasers are available at the bottom of the — just add team name, photo, headline and page number. Styles are included on the style sheet for each layer of information. All of the above information is also true for the tab version of the cover. The inside page template can be duplicated for each team in the section.

Content for team pages includes:

  • Main story: This can jump to another page, or contain to the page.
  • Coach quote/mug: Ideally this quote will be unique, and not included within the main story.
  • The Essentials: This includes a schedule, team record from last season, historical record, location of home field and ticket information.
  • Team Notes: Key returnees are listed by name and position. Same for key losses. What's solic and what's questionable are short lists of three items apiece.
  • Team roster: Name, jersey number, height, weight, class and position are included. This content can be formatted from the style sheet. Each team ideally gets 1/2 page to keep the ad stacks modular. Doing so makes production work easier and keeps the style consistent throughout the section. Two team packages can be stacked to fill an open page. The inside page content plan is the same for the tab version. The tab version only differs in that it's spread across two 1/2-pages. A content checklist is available in pdf to aid copy flow.

VIDEO: F3 — FRIDAY FOOTBALL FEVER SECTION

You shoud try it: If you have a variety of teams — either high school or college — you cover, a weekly preview section for those weekend games could make a lot of sense. A Thursday — or at the latest — Friday would be good days for the section to appear.

The templates you'll get: A cover and inside page template.

The content: The broadsheet cover content includes a breakdown of the night's match-ups and a couple bulleted refers to stories inside. The story is intended to be a profile of a player, coach or team. The layered headline includes a large name/label, along with class, position and school. Any athlete, coach or team profile should include a number box. The cover photo must be localized. The cover content for the tabloid option is almost the same as the broadsheet. What differs is that the cover is more like a magazine cover. The story, layered headline, numbers box and photo would run on an open inside page. The inside page content for the broadsheet version includes:

  • For the home team: A blurb about the offense, blurb about the defense, blurb from the coach (w/ mug), 2009 schedule and a numbers box that's shared with the visiting team. The photo can be of either team, file or shot for this publication.
  • For the visiting team: A blurb on strengths, another on weakness, blurb from the coach (w/ mug), and a numbers box that shares space with the home team. The tabloid format includes all of the above except for the 2009 schedules and numbers box. A content check list also is available in pdf to keep track of copy flow.

 VIDEO: TEAM/PLAYER POSTER PAGE

You should try it: This is a great fit for nearly any newspaper. If you cover numerous teams, consider running a team photo each week, over the course of several weeks. If you cover only one or two teams, consider a series of player posters, focusing on the team's seniors. Of course, there's advertising space on the templates.

The technical piece: This document works for both tab and broadsheet versions. The team photo needs to be set up with the team and can be formal or candid. Extended cutline to list player names. Team stats are displayed prominently under the photo. A premium ad position is built into this page. Color can be changed on the page to match the team uniforms.

 VIDEO: PROMO AND RACK CARDS

You should try it: If you run any of the products above, running promotions makes sense.

The technical side: All promotional material for both broadsheet and tabs are on one multipage file. The 1/4-page promo is an editable file and has places for newspaper names and contact info for advertising and circulation. Cover images for the preview and Friday sections are available as jpgs and are included on the promo. The images used are from the prototype pages. The pages can be used as-is in the promo. The page images also can be replaced with page images that contain local photos. Two rack cards are available. One for the preview section, another for the Friday section. The preview section rack cards are available for broadsheet and tab versions. The Friday section rack card is designed without a page image, so it can be used for either broadsheet or tab. All rack cards have places for newspaper names and contact info.
