The centerpiece on the front of today's Observer-Dispatch shows a great example of how to increase the number of photos in the package without occupyiing any more valuable space. The three vertical photos, when combined, take up the same amount of space a a larger horizontal photo.

All three photos of Hurricane Irene survivors cealing up in the wake of the storm were nicely shot by Observer-Dispatch photographer Angelica Morrison.

For these images to work in this kind of space, considerations must be made for the photos. For example, in each, the subject and/or action is vertical within the vertical photo. In the first and third photos, the men are standing. The water in the middle photo runs fro top to bottom. In other words, the photos work becuse the photo content can work in three equally sized photo boxes. If the subject or action were horizontal in nature and could not be croped, this effect would have been difficult to achieve.

Nice headline, Inside and online content promos and a quote at the bottom help frame the package.

Elswehere, the page is clean and straight to keep the focus on the centerpiece.

Nicely done.
