Beth Cole of Colorado Springs, Colo., hugs her dog, Namme, Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at her family's home in Roscoe, Ill. Namme wandered off from Cole's home more than two years ago and was found in Ionia, Mich. Below, Ionia, Mich., animal control officer Gordy Douglas called Cole to say Namme had been found in Ionia, which is 1,300 miles from Colorado Springs.
Two GateHouse newspapers combine efforts to tell the story from start to finish of a dog’s 2½-year odyssey from Colorado Springs, Colo., to Ionia, Mich., to Rockford, Ill.
WHAT THEY DID: The story begins with the Sentinel-Standard in Ionia, Mich., where a stray dog named Namme is found wandering the streets. It ends with the Rockford Register Star and the community of Roscoe, where the dog is reunited with its owner after 2½ years and 1,300 miles of wandering.
Karen Bota covers the story for the Ionia Sentinel-Standard. Chris Green provides the coverage for the Rockford Register Star. The two do an excellent job of covering this heart-touching reunion. You can follow Bota on Twitter at @KarenB_ISS and Green at @chrisfgreen.
“Pet stories are very popular with our demographic,” said Lori Kilchermann, general manager of the Sentinel-Standard. “When we realized that we wouldn't have the opportunity to capture the actual lost dog and owner reunion, it was a disappointment, but we did capture a family member retrieving the dog from the shelter.
“When we realized the reunion would be in the backyard of a sister GateHouse paper, we were hopeful that together we would be able to see the story through to the end for our readers. Assistant managing editor Anna Derocher and reporter Chris Green at the Rockford Register Star picked up the story, capturing the moment in words, photos and video.”
The Sentinel-Standard then posted the Register Star content online and published it in the print edition, a process according to Kilchermann, made easier through Saxotech.
THE TAKEAWAY: GateHouse properties cover a lot of territory, so always look for ways to share content or use sister sites to help cover a story.
