Story idea: What are communities doing to promote GenH?

The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that it will advertise only healthier foods to children on its television channels, radio station and website. Disney claims it is the first major media company to set a standard for food advertising on kid-focused TV programming.

Once the current contracts expire by 2015, all food and beverage products advertised, promoted and sponsored by Disney and ABC will have to meet nutrition guidelines set by the company. Disney owns ABC.

To localize:

What is your community doing to meet the expectations of Generation Healthy? Find area organizations, businesses and movements to get their feedback on Disney’s decision. Do they see the action taking root on the local level?

Talk to area health facilities and professionals. Create an FAQ from their feedback. Craft the insight and information into an ASF, such as “Five ways to prepare a healthy dinner …”

Create a reader poll to see if the local community is concerned and/or focused on creating change in eating habits. What steps are being taken by schools, day-care centers and summer camps?

Ask parents to share their thoughts and advice on children’s nutrition. Create an “Ask the Expert” column on nutrition or a community blog involving practical advice from parents, doctors and dietitians.
