Visually impressive Sunday front for The Bulletin includes a massive centerpiece that takes up the majority of the front page. The tone of the story is set immediately with the use of yellowing paper as a backround for the package. The main story is about a World War II veteran from Michigan, Carl Strom, who hopes to contact the relatives of local Connecticut soldier Felix Petrowski who died in the war to say that his gravesite is being taken care of by locals. Touching story. I really like the sidebar, which is an old AP story from 1944 that heavily quotes Petrowski, who was then only 20 years old. Good, good stuff.

Other visuals include old photographs of Strom, Petrowski and Petrowski's grave around which many people, presumably Frech locals, can be seen. The map of Europe locates cities mentioned in the story. With so much space occupied by the map, I would have liked to see more information included there. Also, the cutline tha tdescribes the three images seems a bit far from the photos it describes.

I like how much space is given to the package, with the background anchored at top and bottom. With so much color in the centerpiece, I would have argued for more subtle skybox refers taht use less color and more traditioinal fonts. The abundant color and fonts create a bit of clutter up there. I like the Easter promo, but I would stay away from using the Hobo font. Yes, it looks fun and playful, but read about why it shouldn' be used here, here, here, here and here.

I can't end this post without praising the folks who decided to break the front page mold. They took a chance here and it paid off. Well done!
