A small newsroom can do big things.

The Lake Sun, in Camdeonton, Mo., is a great example of that.

The newsroom of five full time employees, just launched a redesign that included a host of new features and improved story telling.

Some of the upgrades include:

• New color palette, font package, and "L" shape design.

• Better promotion and navigation on the front page.

• Variety of new people-focused features including a "today's smile" on page 1, a spot on page 2 for reader submitted photos, and an athlete of the day feature in sports.

• Variety of alternative story formats, like Q&A interviews, day trip features, and more.

• New opinion features, including a recap of the things that the paper believes should happen next week and a daily E-Board of residents that address issues in town with short commentary daily.

• New format to Real Estate section with a focus on the detail of rooms and features. Below, see a before and after of the paper's front page and a slideshow of images of the redesign.

HERE'S A SLIDESHOW OF THE REDESIGN

The Lake Sun took part in the GateHouse Newsroom Incubator program which helps newsrooms through redesigns and other product development. The process starts with the development of a content plan, through working with news division staff. Local newspapers are provided various template and nameplate options and make decisions about what content and look best fits their paper, while using the content plan to help shape those decisions. The news division handles all heavy lifting through the process, including building all templates and handling all technical issues and often can help with training through the process.
