With arguably the single biggest sporting event of the year taking place yesterday, you would think a front page with Super Bowl coverage would take top honors for front page of the weekend.
Well, that's not the case today.
That honor goes to the Journal Star's front page from Saturday with a bold preview to the game presented above the nameplate in a spectacular skybox package.
The AP photo shows the massive Roman numerals for Super Bowl 46. The illuminated letters stand out against the cloudy azure sky in Indianapolis where the game was played.
The photo played perfectly with the "Eyes on Indy" headline. My only quibble about the headline is the loose kerning between some letter pairs. Larger type, especially capitalized type, should be adjusted carefully to keep the spacing more consistent between some letters. What caught my attention is the spacing between the "E" and "S" of "EYES, of "ON" and on both sides of the "N" in "INDY".
Below the head are four neatly edited promotions to stories inside about the game, the stats, the ads and the hype. See how the page numbers are included in the same graph as the promo? Doing so makes cleaner blocks of type.
To the right of the promotions is a staff story on betting by Gary Childs.
Elsewhere, the rest of content on the page is cleanly presented with little to distract from the fine package above. Those two stories below the fold are doozies that put the news of a football game into perspective. Read them here and here.
Super page.
