When covering a home fire of any magnitude, there's always a concern for the safety of residents. But I'm sure we all can say that a palpable feeling is that flames will be present when the photographer arrives on the scene.

For Jack Foley, staff photographer for The Herald News, certainly had no problem capturing flames in his viewfinder with this fire of a multifamily home.

It's important to note that no one was injured in this massive fire, which is astounding considering its size. Several pets, though, did perish.

The flames in this spectacular photo, of course, are what draws attention to this front page. The flames in this photo alone are large enough and bright enough to gain the attention of people across the street from a newspaper box.

Looking more closely, Foley captured a number of details in his photo. Here's a closer look:

From Foley's angle:

• The flames are considerably higher than the house next door.
• A van or other similar vehicle parked in front is completely engulfed as well.
• Two firefighters are seen on scene, adding scale.
• The stream of water from the hose cuts right through the fire in the background.
• The firefighters target the house at left, with the hope of keeping it from catching fire.
• The two main firefighters in the photo frame another hose in the background.

There's a lot to like about this photo.

The main story is written by staff writer Derek Vital, as is the sidebar.

Nice, too, is the numbers list at left. It's not often information like this is available for breaking news. But considering when firefighters arrived on scene — shortly after 4 p.m. — there was time to compile this nice breakout.

Well done.
